Plasma Cutter
Plasma cutting is a process that cuts through electrically conductive materials by means of an accelerated jet of hot plasma. Typical materials cut with a plasma torch include steel, Stainless steel, aluminium, brass and copper, although other conductive metals may be cut as well.
There are multiple types of plasma cutting, including: air plasma cutting and high definition cutting. Both these variances use hypertherm consumables, African Machine Supplies caters for all types of plasma cutting.
Plasma cutting is widely used in industries that work with sheet metal. This includes the automotive, aeronautical, construction, repair salvage and scrapping industries. Due to the high speed and precision cuts combined with low cost, plasma cutting sees widespread use from large-scale industrial CNC applications down to small hobbyist shops.
How does it work?
Plasma is superheated, electrically ionised gas. The plasma cutting procedure involves creating a cove of this plasma from the cutter onto the work piece and then forming a closed circuit back to the cutter through the use of a clamp.
In order to do this, compressed gas is blown through a nozzle at the work piece, and an electric arc is created in the gas. The electric arc ionises the gas, creating the plasma. Electricity from the torch travels along the plasma to the work piece, melting the metal which is then blown away by the by the high velocity gas and plasma.
Plasma cutting can cut through both thick and thin sheets of electrically conductive material. Due to the ‘cone’ of high pressure gas formed around the torch, plasma cutters are particularly adept at cutting sheets metal in curved or angular shapes.
